The palm rest is now plastic rather than rubber which is really good. It feels nice on the palm. On the last model (k50) my palm left a permanent imprint on the palm rest because of the silicone material used. You can easily remove the palm rest if need be. The palm rest uses two strong magnets to attach to the keyboard and stays firmly in place.
