UNKNOWN MONK GIG FROM ’68. NICE. – An unheard concert by Monk and his great band (Monk, Charlie Rouse-tenor sax, Larry Gales-bass, and Ben Riley-drums) from ’68. This approximately 47 minute show includes tunes like “Ruby My Dear”, “Well You Needn’t”, “Epistrophy” and other compositions that Monk fans will recognize. Also here is a Monk solo piece, “Don’t Blame Me”, which gives this album some depth and puts Monk’s style on good display.

    2. S. D (verified owner)

Damaged – first cd arrived incredibly damaged but second CD was perfectly fine

    3. A. J (verified owner)

Basic! – Phenomenal recording, great for neophytes and connaisseurs alike.

Wonderful Performance Desecrated by Atrocious Remastering – This was an excellent concert, and the high-school custodian who taped it seems to have done an admirable job. Unfortunately, when preparing this priceless historic recording for issue, Universal Music Group unaccountably chose to hire the hip-hop musician Grandmixer DXT to “bring the audio from the concert into the 21st century.” That’s a direct quotation from some of their advertising, and what it means is that on the four quartet tracks the bass, low-midrange, and some treble frequencies have been boosted to the point that they pretty much overwhelm everything else, turning what was originally a clear, well-balanced recording into a harsh, boomy, muddy, distorted mess. (The two solo piano tracks have been tampered with much less and basically sound fine.) I’m sure Grandmixer DXT is a very talented turntablist, and he may also be great at mastering modern pop and hip-hop recordings. However, on the evidence of this release, he appears to have very little familiarity with or respect for jazz, and absolutely no conception of what an acoustic bass is supposed to sound like. In fact, in what amounts to a tacit admission that the sound on this release is an utter travesty, the folks at Universal announced that for the June 12, 2021 Record Store Day they would release a limited-edition vinyl LP called “Palo Alto: The Custodian’s Mix.” Unlike the CD or the standard version of the LP, the “Custodian’s Mix” LP “uses the audio from the original tape to put you in that high school auditorium in October 1968 and lets you feel what it was like to be in the room.” So if you don’t think Thelonious Monk’s timeless music needed to to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century and adulterated to bring it in line with the expectations of today’s pop music fans, the “Custodian’s Mix” LP is probably the way to go — assuming, that is, that you still have a turntable and are able to track down one of the 4400 copies they produced.

This is a Great MONK Concert Album! – From the packaging to the listening experience, this is truly a great, wonderful and thoughtful MONK concert album. I wasn’t expecting such a good audio experience as I knew the original recording was not professionally produced. Every jazz affectionado needs to have a copy!

It’s Thelonius Monk! It’s his Blues! – Bought a copy each for my brother and sister. We all attended the rival school across town from Palo Alto HS, none of us attended this concert and regret it to this day. The album notes tell the amazing history of its genesis, which none of us had known. ‘Monk’ is played regularly in my PA home. I have been told that it happily accompanied my GA brother as he opened his Christmas gifts and continues to delight. My OR sister listens to it last thing in the evening to soothe. It was a serendipitous find as I wracked my brain to find their perfect gifts. We had loved the music of Thelonius Monk and this collection did not disappoint.

WHAT A TREAT! – Love it, love it, love it. Band is cooking…sound is great….and the backstory is the icing on the top! Thank you, Impulse! And much thanks to Mr. Scher and the anonymous/unknown janitor who recorded the experience!! Of course, thank you also to Thelonious, Jr. who has continued to keep the fires burning for Monk all these years. I am so grateful for all the recordings we already have, but I sure hope “new” finds continue to be unearthed for many more years!!! Go Monk Go!
